By now, if you are a law enforcement officer, you have probably heard the term “e-Citation” and may have even had the opportunity to use an e-Citation solution on the job.  What you may not know, however, is that there are some great options for signature capture available to you.  During my business interactions with members of the law enforcement, we often discuss signature capture options for e-Citations, also known as Electronic Citations.  Here are some of the questions I commonly ask when determining the ideal e-Citation solution to fit the needs of a particular jurisdiction:

  • Does an e-Citation in your jurisdiction require the issuing officer to sign the form?
  • Can you use an electronically recorded version of the officer’s signature for this purpose?
  • Do you need an easy way to record an officer’s signature electronically?
  • Does an eCitation in your jurisdiction require the charged person’s signature?
  • Does your eCitation software record an electronic version of their signature?

If you have answered YES to any of these questions, this blog post is for you.
The L-Tron 4810 Barcode Scanner is the most popular barcode scanner used in Public Safety vehicles for e-Citation applications – and for good reason.  Not only does the 4810 Barcode Scanner allow you to scan the barcode found on a driver’s license and vehicle registration, it also allows you to take pictures. With this picture-taking ability, you can easily record someone’s signature electronically, using a form similar to the one below.
signature capture - partial
Sound complicated?  It’s actually quite simple.  The 2D barcode above the signature box contains a command that instructs the barcode scanner to take a picture, crop what is inside the box, and return it as an image file in jpg format.  It’s quick and easy.  You can then use this form with the 4810 Barcode Scanner to capture your officers’ signatures for your e-Citations application.
If you already use e-Citation software and want to add signature capture capability, contact L-Tron and we will work with your software provider to add this functionality.  If you sell eCitation software and want to add this functionality to your product, contact L-Tron and we will work with your engineers to add it.
