In July 2010, the SSA and IRS announced the addition of a bar-coded version substitute for W-2 /W-3 forms to the list of acceptable submission formats.  While bar-coded formats are optional in 2010, they are manadatory in 2011.  Future plans include adding barcodes to forms such as the 1099s.   Barcode scanning in comparison to the traditional manual keying of data, provides tax preparers with a method to accelerate data entry while reducing error rate, which can average up to 5%.  Recent studies show it takes up to twenty minutes to input a new customer’s information.  Tax preparers are always looking for ways to be more productive while improving the customer experience.
